Phineas Gage is a medical marvel remembered for his remarkable survival of a traumatic brain injury. In 1848, he became famous after a tamping iron went through his skull, making him the first documented case of a major brain injury survivor. While his injury is what made him famous, many people don’t know what job he had prior to the accident. Gage was born in 1823 in Lebanon, New Hampshire. He worked as a stagecoach driver, but originally he was employed as a construction worker. At the time of his injury, Gage was working as a foreman for the Rutland and Burlington Railroad in Vermont. His job involved blasting and excavating rock for the railroads. Gage’s job required him to use a tamping iron, a metal rod used to compact gunpowder and other explosives into the ground. It was while tamping powder into a hole that the tamping iron went off, passing through his left cheek and out the top of his skull. His accident was remarkable in that he survived, but his survival was even more remarkable due to the fact that Gage was conscious and talking immediately after the accident. He was even able to climb into a cart and ride to the doctor’s office. Following the accident, Gage was subject to a range of medical studies, as doctors struggled to understand the effects of his injury. He lived for another 12 years, but his personality changed dramatically and his behavior was often inappropriate and erratic. Gage’s injury and subsequent survival changed the way doctors thought about the brain, and it laid the foundation for the field of neuroscience. His story is an incredible reminder of the power of the human body and the resilience of the human spirit.
